When is the Right Time to Repaint a Home Exterior?

When is the Right Time to Repaint a Home Exterior?

When is the right time to repaint your house? You’ll know by several reasons.

The exterior of your home is one of the most important things to get right. It creates the first impression to your neighbors and guests and making sure it looks its best is critical to staging and selling a home. Redoing the exterior paint of a house is necessary every so often, but it can be difficult to tell when exactly is the right time. Repainting is not something that is done lightly, after all – it takes time and proper preparation (along with a team of experts like those at North Arundel Contracting!). Here’s how to tell when it’s the right time to repaint the exterior of your home.

Home Age and Material

The older your home is, the more likely it needs to be repainted. However, the material your home is made out of will also influence how long it will need to go between fresh coats of paint. For example, a wooden house will need to be repainted every 3-7 years because wood is very susceptible to the effects of sunlight. Aluminum needs a new coat of paint every 5-7 years – it’s more stable than wood, but prone to chip damage. Brick is the most stable material and only needs new paint every 15-20 years.

Fading Color

Of course, the most noticeable sign that a repainting job is in order is that the color of the home is fading or becoming discolored. This is a result of the interaction between the paint and the UV radiation of the sun which takes place over a long period of time. Washed-out coloration is more common in parts of the world with more days of sunlight every year. In addition, constant rain plays a role in fading paint as well.

Out of Style Color

Another big reason why you may want to repaint is purely cosmetic in nature. The paint outside may not be chipped or discolored at all, but it may simply not be in fashion anymore. And even if the old-fashioned paint color doesn’t bother you personally, you may want to do it for potential homebuyers if you’re looking to sell soon. This helps your home stay competitive in the market and helps you get the highest possible resale value for it.
