When Should Windows Be Replaced?

When Should Windows Be Replaced?

Is it time for new windows? Here’s how you can be sure.

Windows are one of the most critical components of a home. They play a big role in energy efficiency and making your home more comfortable. As they are a barrier between the inside and outside worlds, their performance is expected to degrade slowly over time. So, it can be difficult to know exactly when it’s time to replace them. But there are a few things you can watch out for. Here are some of the signs that you should contact North Arundel Contracting for a window replacement!

Visible Damage

Visible damage is the easiest sign for most to recognize that you need new windows. Windows that are damaged are more likely to break completely, leaving your home at risk. Water can seep into your home, which can lead to other, more serious problems such as water damage and mold/mildew growth.

Drafts

Drafty windows create their own set of problems. It makes your HVAC system work harder to keep your home comfortable, and over time this extra strain can take its toll. It can make your home feel more humid in the summer and chillier in the winter. Drafts aren’t always very apparent, though. To check for a draft, close and lock your window, then hold your hand at the bottom of the sash. If you can feel air coming into your home, it’s a draft, and you’ll need to get your windows repaired or replaced soon.

Skyrocketing Energy Bills

Of course, there are several reasons why your energy bills might go up. Changing seasons, a warmer or cooler than normal season, and additional electronic device usage may all contribute to a higher energy bill. However, if you haven’t changed your energy usage pattern dramatically, yet the bill is still higher than normal, it could be that your windows aren’t operating as well as they should be. Replacing them with new energy-efficient models could help stabilize your energy bills.

Condensation Between Panes

For homes with double or triple pane windows, condensation forming between the panes is a sure sign that the windows need replacing. This means that the vacuum seal between them has broken, and the insulating gas has escaped the window. This leads to a serious failure of your windows to perform optimally, and one should replace them as soon as possible.
