Spring is about to become summer. As such, you’ll have to be more vigilant for a fire emergency that can threaten your Eastport home. If you don’t already have one in place, make sure you update your plan to keep your family safe amid all of the summer fun this year.

Create a Map

Even though you might be thinking about remodeling or renovating your Eastport home, you should create a floor plan and map of your house. First, make one of your house as it is now, and then draw a second one that will reflect all of the changes you want to make. Connect each room to the nearest exit. You might also want to designate another escape in case the door is blocked. Windows make handy exits in this situation. Make sure that your children understand they need to get out as soon as they can in the event of a fire emergency.

Likewise, you and any other adults in the family should be responsible for making sure everyone can evacuate safely – this includes pets and anyone who isn’t physically able to escape on their own. Once safely outside, it’s time to call the authorities and your insurance company. Don’t forget to call on North Arundel Contracting for our expertise as well.

Practice Makes Perfect

The next step is to ensure that you and your children practice what to do when a fire emergency happens in your Eastport home. This training includes the classic stop, drop, and roll maneuver, along with how to use a shirt to block smoke, and how to test a doorknob to see how hot it is. Frequent practice will make all of this easier and prevent panic in a real situation.

Practice Evacuation Drills

Likewise, you should gather the entire family and practice evacuating, even if no fire emergency is present. Only after everyone is safely outside can firefighters come to and do their part to save your Eastport home – which includes saving anyone who might still be trapped inside. During the evacuation drills, you can remind everyone what the smoke alarm sounds like when it goes off because before any fire starts, it’ll likely be preceded by smoke.
